THE SCOOP ON SHINGLES
WHAT IS SHINGRIX?
Shingrix is an FDA approved vaccine for the prevention of shingles (herpes zoster). Shingles can cause a painful rash and blisters. Shingrix is a 2-dose series, with the second shot administered 2 to 6 months after the first shot.
WHO SHOULD RECEIVE SHINGRIX?
Anyone over 50 years of age who has had the chickenpox or exposed to someone who actively has the chickenpox. Anyone who was previously vaccinated with Zostavax or previously had Shingles.
HOW WELL DOES SHINGRIX WORK?
Shingrix is the only shingles vaccine proven to be up to 90% effective in
clinical trials.
WHAT IF I ALREADY RECEIVED A SHINGLES VACCINE (ZOSTAVAX)?
You should still receive Shingrix to increase your protection against shingles. If it has been at least two months since receiving Zostavax, you may begin the Shingrix series.
WHAT SIDE EFFECTS TO EXPECT WITH SHINGRIX?
Pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, tiredness, headache, shivering, fever, and upset stomach are all common side effects.
What will Shingrix cost me?
Currently, if you have Medicare Part D your shingles vaccine should not have a copay. We submit all shingles shots to insurance and do our best to get them covered. In the instance that your insurance is not in network and/or the shot is not covered, there is a cost associated with the shingles shot. Please be sure to include your insurance information during registration. The cash price for a Shingrix Vaccine is $210.
